Samurai Cop’s Black Belt Academy
(Offered through the Costa Mesa Parks and Recreation Department)
For Youth Ages 6 – 17

Prerequisites to enter this course include the completion of the Samurai Cop’s Advanced self-defense Course, along with its Certificate of Completion, and the rank of Brown Belt (the rank of 3rd Kyu). Recruits attending the Samurai Cop Black Belt Academy 12 week courses must wear Academy uniform (black Judo training jacket and pants with Academy Patches). Recruits attending the Academy classes will continue to test for rank with the goal of attaining their Black Belt in Shuyokan Ryu Aikijutsu. All Samurai Cop Recruits testing for the rank of first degree Black Belt must meet minimum Academy Time In Grade Requirements and be able to demonstrate the required testing techniques in a proficient manner. Black Belt testing will be conducted under the direction of the Shuyokan Dojo, which is the Headquarters for the Samurai Cop Black Belt Academy. The Samurai Cop Academy Black Belt Course is part of the on-going Samurai Cop Advanced self-defense Program offered at the Shuyokan Dojo through the City of Costa Mesa Parks and Recreation. The Academy classes are 12 weeks in length, meet twice weekly, and are held year round.

Tuesdays 7:30pm - 8:30pm   and    Wednesdays 6:00pm - 7:00pm, or  
Tuesdays 7:30pm - 8:30pm and  Thursdays 6:00pm - 7:00pm, or
Wednesdays 6:00pm - 7:00pm and  Thursdays 6:00pm - 7:00pm     






There are 10 stages through which each Academy Recruit must pass
on the journey towards Black Belt:

Samurai Cop Recruit Levels 1, 2, and 3
Techniques must be demonstrated at a proficient skill level for promotion
9th Kyu - Blue Belt - Recruit Level 1
Minimum Time In Grade: 36 Weeks (prior to testing)

Requirements: Completion of Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Samurai Cop self-defense Courses

  1. Single Wrist Grab Release—Backhand Strike To Face—Takedown
  2. Cross Wrist Grab Release—Palm Heel Strike To Face—Takedown
  3. Both Wrist Grab Release—Palm Heel Strike to Face—Takedown
  4. Both Shoulders Grasp—Elbow Strike—Reverse Hand Takedown
  5. Behind Both Shoulders Grasp—Reverse Hand Takedown
  6. Behind Both Wrist Grab—Reverse Hand Takedown

9th Kyu - Blue Belt - Recruit Level 1

8th Kyu - Green Belt - Recruit Level 2
Minimum Time In Grade: 12 Weeks as 9th Kyu
(40 Weeks Accumulative)

Requirements: Completion of Recruit Level 1 and Level 2 Advanced Samurai Cop self-defense Courses

  7. Front Strike—Reverse Hand Takedown
  8. Backhand Strike—Reverse Hand Takedown
  9. Side Strike—Reverse Hand Takedown
10. Stomach Punch—Reverse Hand Takedown

8th Kyu - Green Belt - Recruit Level 2

7th Kyu - Green Belt - Recruit Level 3
Minimum Time In Grade: 12 Weeks as 8th Kyu
(50 Weeks Accumulative)

Requirements: Completion of Recruit Level 1, 2, and 3 Advanced Samurai Cop self-defense Courses

11. Front Strike—Entering Throw
12. Backhand Strike—Entering Throw
13. Side Strike—Entering Throw
14. Stomach Punch—Entering Throw

7th Kyu - Green Belt - Recruit Level 3

Samurai Cop Black Belt Academy
Techniques must be demonstrated at a proficient skill level for promotion.
Free Style one on one and two on one will be included in all testing.
6th Kyu Purple Belt - Junsaho
Minimum Time In Grade: 12 Weeks as 7th Kyu
(60 Weeks Accumulative)

15. Face Punch—Deflection Closing Distance—Kote Gaeshi
16. Face Punch, Back Hand Punch Combination—Kote Gaeshi
17. Single Wrist Grab—Kote Gaeshi
18. Cross Wrist Grab—Kote Gaeshi
19. Front Shoulder Grab—Kote Gaeshi

6th Kyu Purple Belt - Junsaho

5th Kyu Purple Belt - Junsa
Minimum Time In Grade: 12 Weeks as 6th Kyu
(70 Weeks Accumulative)

20. Cross Wrist Grab—Iriminage
21. Two Handed Bent Arm Lapel Grab—Elbow Lock & Strike—Takedown
22. Face Punch—Kote Gaeshi
23. Face Punch—Iriminage
24. Single Hand Push—Yubi Jutsu
25. Single Lapel Grab With Pull—Osoto Gari
26. Rear Arm Choke—Osoto Gari

5th Kyu Purple Belt - Junsa

4th Kyu Brown Belt - Junsacho
Minimum Time In Grade: 24 Weeks as 5th Kyu
(90 Weeks Accumulative)

1. Single Hand Lapel Grab With Face Punch—Kote Gaeshi
2. Two Handed Straight Arm Choke—Step Away Strike—Kote Gaeshi
3. Rear Both Shoulders Grab—Kote Gaeshi—Ogoshi
4. Front Strike With Club—Iriminage
5. Back Hand Strike With Club—Iriminage

4th Kyu Brown Belt - Junsacho

3rd Kyu Brown Belt - Junsabucho
Minimum Time In Grade: 24 Weeks as 4th Kyu
(110 Weeks Accumulative)

1. Two Handed Straight Arm Shoulder Grab—Ippon Seionage
2. Roundhouse Punch To Face—Tai-Otoshi
3. Roundhouse Punch To Face—Osoto Gari
4. Rear Single Wrist Grab With Shoulder Push—Iriminage

3rd Kyu Brown Belt - Junsabucho

2nd Kyu Brown Belt - Keibuho
Minimum Time In Grade: 24 Weeks as 3rd Kyu

Shodan - 1st Degree Black Belt
Minimum Time In Grade: 1 Year as 1st Kyu
Recruits must demonstrate, at a proficient skill level,
the adult testing techniques for Shodan in Shuyokan Ryu Aikijutsu.
