The Samurai Cop Self-Defense Academy, Costa Mesa, California

A Personal Message from the Samurai Cop

Dear Parents and Students,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Shuyokan Dojo and the Samurai Cop Self-Defense Courses. The purpose of these courses is to help the student to become more aware of their surroundings and be better prepared to defend themselves should they be faced with a threatening confrontation involving their personal safety and well being. Students who participate in these courses are not taught techniques for the purposes of fighting! They are instead taught how to use the techniques for the purposes of self-defense should the need arise.

There are four 12 week courses offered through the Costa Mesa Parks and Recreation Department: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and the Samurai Cop Black Belt Academy. Students attending these courses must complete at least eight (8) of the twelve (12) classes in order to receive their Certificate of Completion, which is a requirement for entering the Intermediate, Advanced, and Black Belt Academy courses. Below are the requirements for receiving Certificates of Completion:

Basic Course – 12 weeks for ages 6 yrs to 17 yrs – Students must complete a minimum of 8 classes and recite the Student Code of Honor and demonstrate two techniques to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Intermediate Course – 12 weeks – Completion of the Basic Samurai Cop Self-Defense Course and Certificate of Completion. Students must complete a minimum of 8 classes and be able to demonstrate all techniques taught in this course to receive their Certificate of Completion.

Advanced Course (SCABBC) – 12 weeks – Completion of the Intermediate Samurai Cop Self-Defense Course and Certificate of Completion. Students must wear the Academy Uniform, have a copy of the Academy Training Manual, complete a minimum of 8 classes and be able to demonstrate all techniques taught in this course. Those students successfully completing this course will receive a Recruit Certificate of Completion, a Blue Belt and a Certificate of 9th Kyu ranking in Shuyokan Aikido. Recruits will continue in the Advanced Course to receive their Brown Belt.

Samurai Cop Academy Black Belt Courses – Completion of the Advanced Samurai Cop Self-Defense Course and Certificate of Completion. Recruits attending the Samurai Cop Black Belt Academy Classes must wear a black Judo uniform, appropriate Patches, and hold the rank of Brown Belt. Recruits attending the Academy classes will continue to test for rank with the goal of attaining their Black Belt in Shuyokan Aikijutsu. The Samurai Cop Academy Black Belt Course is part of the ongoing Samurai Cop Advanced Self-Defense Program offered at the Shuyokan Dojo.

As a parent and a law enforcement officer of 34 years, I cannot stress the importance of our youth in the community learning self-defense. As parents we cannot be with our children 24 hours a day to protect them from many of the daily personal threats they may face which could endanger their safety and well being. You have shown your concern for your child's safety by enrolling them in these courses, and in doing so, your child will gain the personal confidence to be better prepared to face and deal with a potential threat.

Lastly, I would like to inform you it is a requirement for all our Lead Instructors who teach the Samurai Cop Self-Defense Courses to be fingerprinted by the Costa Mesa Police Department through the California Department of Criminal Justice. Should you have any further questions about the courses we offer, please do not hesitate to contact me either in person or by calling the Shuyokan Dojo at (714) 557-6372.
